SEKEM, Egypt’s leading social enterprise committed to regenerative development, has signed a strategic cooperation agreement to implement the “Towards Organic Agriculture” project.
The agreement, forged in collaboration with the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Matrouh Governorate, the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC), and IEOC Production B.V. (representing Eni), was officially signed during the EGYPES conference.

Key attendees included H.E. Eng. Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources; Major General Khaled Shoeib, Governor of Matrouh; Eng. Francesco Gasparri, General Manager of IEOC; Eng. Salah AbdelKerim, CEO of EGPC; and Helmy Abouleish, CEO of SEKEM Group.
Transforming Agriculture & Empowering Farmers
The “Towards Organic Agriculture” project is set to revolutionize organic farming in Egypt, particularly in Matrouh Governorate, by supporting 700 farmers in transitioning to sustainable practices. The initiative also integrates these farmers into a carbon certification system, enabling them to generate additional income while contributing to environmental sustainability.

To ensure a successful transition, the project offers comprehensive training programs, access to organic inputs, composting systems, and photovoltaic water pumping units. It also facilitates organic certification and direct connections with premium buyers, ensuring long-term financial sustainability for farmers.
A Vision for Sustainable Agriculture
Helmy Abouleish, CEO of SEKEM Group, emphasized the critical role of farmers in Egypt’s economy, stating:
“According to the FAO, 24 million Egyptians work in agriculture and fishing, yet farming often lacks the recognition and support it deserves. SEKEM is committed to fostering a holistic approach to sustainable development through our ‘Economy of Love’ model.

By empowering farmers to embrace organic and biodynamic farming, we not only enhance soil health and crop quality but also promote carbon sequestration and economic resilience through carbon credits.”
Through this initiative, SEKEM aims to support 700 farmers in Matrouh as part of a broader effort to transition 40,000 farmers to sustainable agriculture by 2025.
SEKEM: Pioneering Sustainability for Over Four Decades
For nearly 50 years, SEKEM has been at the forefront of sustainable development in Egypt. Working alongside the Egyptian Biodynamic Association (EBDA), the organization has helped 17,000+ farmers convert 47,000 acres to organic and biodynamic agriculture. SEKEM’s initiatives address climate change, food security, and water scarcity while fostering biodiversity and environmental awareness.
